Hydrogen

Hydrogen is an element that can be used to produce renewable energy. It is a powerful energy source with a high energy density. It is therefore often mentioned as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Unlike other renewable energy sources, hydrogen can power heavy ships and even planes.

Hydrogen is extracted from water or natural gas. If renewable energy is used in the production of hydrogen, this is considered CO2-neutral. Hydrogen is an energy carrier. That means the energy of hydrogen can be stored and preserved for a later time. For example, excess solar energy can be stored in hydrogen to be used when the sun doesn’t shine.

Why invest in hydrogen ETFs?

Investing in hydrogen means investing in sustainable initiatives. Hydrogen has been talked about as a (sustainable) alternative to fossil fuels for a relatively long time. Former US President Clinton called hydrogen “the fuel of the future”.

The president's prediction has not yet come true. However, the waning interest in the application of hydrogen has rebounded. This is due in part to the pressure to avert climate change. Hydrogen is considered one of the important sustainable energy carriers of the future. One drawback, however, is that hydrogen applications are not currently available everywhere. Also, there are still some practical hurdles to deploying hydrogen, such as distribution and safety.

With more and more successful cases, hydrogen companies can show that they can deliver on their promise. Practical applications and extended reach are important for the success of hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels.

ETFs are well suited to invest in hydrogen. The sector is growing and far from matured. The market is divided among several companies. The fact that the hydrogen market is changing rapidly makes it riskier to invest in individual companies. An ETF brings diversification when investing in this market.
