What are semiconductors?

All materials on earth can be divided into three categories: conductors, insulators and semiconductors. This refers to how well materials transmits (or conducts) electricity. For example, copper is a good conductor. Glass, on the other hand, will not allow electricity to pass through.

Semiconductors are unique because these materials can be manipulated. By nature, they do not allow electricity to pass through (and thus are insulators). But the addition of other substances, temperature changes or exposure to light changes their properties so that they do allow electricity to pass through.

Semiconductors are best known for the (computer) chips made from them. Many of these chips are made with silicon. This semiconductor material is mined from sand and is one of the most abundant elements on earth.

Why invest in semiconductor ETFs?

Demand for semiconductors has exploded in recent years. This is because our lives are increasingly surrounded by technology. Think of the smart appliances you have in your home, the washing machine, your smartphone as well as the car you drive. We are using more and more electrical devices, and with the Internet of Things (IoT), they are becoming more sophisticated. That means more and more chips are needed to produce these devices.

The semiconductor market is a growing industry involving billions of dollars. With our demand for new and increasingly sophisticated technology, the need for chips is also increasing. By investing in a semiconductor ETF, you are betting on the growth of this market as a whole. Many semiconductor ETFs have dozens of chip manufacturers in their stock index.
