What is an ETF?

What is the S&P 500?

The S&P 500 tracks the 500 largest US companies. The index is the most popular and widely followed stock index worldwide. It’s issued by Standard and Poor's, a major US credit rating agency. Abbreviated, this credit rating agency is called S&P, hence the name.

The composition of the S&P 500 is decided by the 'S&P Index Committee', a committee from Standard and Poor's. This committee periodically determines which companies are included in the index. In doing so, they follow a set policy. Companies must meet the following conditions:

The company is traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or the NASDAQ.
The company's market capitalisation is greater than or equal to $14.6 billion.
At least 50% of the shares are publicly traded.
The liquidity of the company's shares is high.
The operating income for the last four quarters is positive.

The S&P 500 index can help indicate the health of the US economy. Currently, the economy in the US is the largest economy in the world. The US is expected to remain a key player on the world stage for decades to come.

Historical data shows that the S&P 500 has grown significantly over the past decades. Although some years have seen negative returns, the index shows long-term growth. Investors with a long-term strategy, may consider adding an S&P 500 ETF to their portfolio.
