What is an ETF?
ETFs, also known as trackers, are funds that follow the performance of an index, commodity, bond or composition of products. Unlike some other funds, ETFs are bought and sold on a stock exchange. Would you like to learn more about ETFs? Read our ETF article for all you need to know.
Sustainability
Sustainability is an umbrella term for a number of criteria that selected companies must meet. A commonly used measure is ESG, which stands for Environment, Social and Governance. Companies that meet ESG benchmarks score high in these areas.
Due to the growing interest in climate and social developments, sustainable investing has been increasing in popularity in recent years. Companies are increasingly adapting their business operations to sustainability criteria, and companies have emerged that actively combat climate change, such as manufacturers of wind turbines and solar collectors.
Why invest in sustainable ETFs?
Sustainability is a broad field and investors can invest in it for a variety of reasons; return and moral conviction are different drivers. For investors who want to invest in specific aspects of sustainability, there are thematic funds, e.g., ETFs that invest in clean energy.
Because of the wide diversity of ETF investments, it is difficult to make general statements about the price performance of sustainability funds. If an investor takes a broad view of the sustainability criteria, they can choose a well-diversified ETF. The more specifically they want to invest, the more any returns will depend on the sector in which their ETF invests.
